Recognized repeatedly for his efforts, he received honors such as a California Senate Resolution in 2011 for 32 years of service and a formal recognition from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in May 2023 for 50 years of contributions (posthumously).Marvis Phillips passed away on April 4, 2023. Following his death, community members, friends, and officials held memorial services, a celebration of life, and tributes (including videos from the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission) highlighting his transformative impact on the Tenderloin and broader San Francisco through persistent organizing, coalition-building, and direct action.
